SSC Stenographer is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) to recruit Stenographers for Grade C and Grade D positions across various central government ministries, departments, constitutional bodies, tribunals, and attached offices.
A Stenographer is a skilled professional who records speech using shorthand at high speed and transcribes it accurately on a computer. The role is central to the functioning of government offices — from capturing press briefings to transcribing ministerial speeches and maintaining official records.
Contrary to what many students assume, a Stenographer’s job is dynamic, close to decision-making, and carries real responsibilities. Here is what the daily work looks like:
Candidates must have passed Class 12 (10+2) from a recognised Board or University. There is no stream restriction — Science, Commerce, and Arts all qualify equally.
SSC Stenographer selection is clean and straightforward — three stages, no interview.
The CBE is a 200-question, 200-mark exam to be completed in 120 minutes. It has sectional timing — you cannot move between sections freely. The paper is available in English and Hindi (except the English Language section).
| Section | Subject | Questions | Marks | Time |
| Section 1 | General Intelligence & Reasoning | 50 | 50 | 30 min |
| Section 2 | General Awareness | 50 | 50 | 30 min |
| Section 3 | English Language & Comprehension | 100 | 100 | 60 min |
| Total | 200 | 200 | 120 min |
Candidates who clear the CBE are called for the Stenography Skill Test. A passage is dictated which candidates must capture in shorthand and then transcribe on a computer within the allotted time.
| Post | Dictation Speed | Transcription (English) | Transcription (Hindi) |
| Stenographer Grade C | 100 w.p.m. | 40 minutes | 55 minutes |
| Stenographer Grade D | 80 w.p.m. | 50 minutes | 65 minutes |
SSC Stenographer offers one of the best salary packages among SSC exams for 12th pass candidates — especially Grade C, which sits at Level 6, the same as an Assistant Section Officer in SSC CGL.
| Grade | Pay Level | Basic Pay | In-Hand Salary (Approx.) |
| Grade C (Group B Non-Gazetted) | Level 6 | Rs. 35,400 | ~Rs. 51,000/month |
| Grade D (Group C Non-Gazetted) | Level 4 | Rs. 25,500 | ~Rs. 36,000/month |

The SSC Stenographer promotion ladder is one of the most clearly defined in the government. Every promotion brings significantly higher pay and greater access to decision-making. Here is how the path looks:
| Grade | Promotion Path |
| Stenographer Grade D | → Stenographer Grade C |
| Stenographer Grade C | → Personal Assistant (PA) |
| Personal Assistant | → Private Secretary (PS) |
| Private Secretary | → Senior PS / Principal Private Secretary |
They serve different profiles. SSC CGL offers more posts and higher starting pay for some roles. But SSC Stenographer is easier to qualify (Class 12 sufficient), the exam is less competitive, and the Grade C salary at Level 6 is equivalent to CGL’s ASO — making it a premium option for 12th pass candidates who develop their shorthand skill.
Yes. SSC issues a combined notification for Grade C and Grade D. Candidates can apply for both grades in one application. Post allocation depends on your CBE rank and preferences.
The dictation is at 100 wpm for Grade C and 80 wpm for Grade D. You then transcribe in 40 minutes (English) or 55 minutes (Hindi) for Grade C, and 50 minutes (English) or 65 minutes (Hindi) for Grade D. The test measures your ability to capture and reproduce speech accurately — both speed and accuracy count.
You are disqualified from that recruitment cycle regardless of your CBE score. Your CBE rank does not carry over. You will need to reapply and clear both stages again in the next cycle.
