Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is RRB NTPC a good career choice in 2026?

Absolutely. NTPC offers some of the best entry-level government jobs in India — office-based roles, salaries ranging from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 55,000 in-hand depending on post, free railway passes, subsidised housing, free healthcare, NPS pension, and clear promotion paths. For both 12th-pass and graduate candidates, NTPC is one of the most complete career packages available.

What is the difference between CBT 1 and CBT 2?

CBT 1 is a screening test — it shortlists candidates for CBT 2 but your CBT 1 marks are NOT counted in the final merit. CBT 2 is the actual merit-based exam — its marks carry 100% weightage in the final ranking. Focus your preparation on CBT 2, while ensuring you clear CBT 1 with a comfortable margin.

Can a 12th pass candidate apply for Station Master or Goods Guard?

No. Station Master and Goods Guard are Graduate Level posts — a Bachelor’s Degree (any stream) from a recognised university is mandatory. 12th-pass candidates can apply only for Under Graduate Level posts: Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Trains Clerk, Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, and Junior Time Keeper.

Is the Typing Test mandatory for all NTPC posts?

No. The Typing Skill Test (TST) is required only for Clerk cum Typist posts — Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Senior Clerk cum Typist, and Junior Account Asst. cum Typist. Posts like Station Master, Goods Guard, Traffic Assistant, Commercial Apprentice, and Trains Clerk do not require a Typing Test.

What is CBAT and is it difficult?

CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test) is required only for the Station Master post. It is a psychometric and aptitude test covering memory, attention, perception, and vigilance. It is qualifying — you must score minimum 42 marks in each of the test batteries. It is not as academic as CBT — but it requires specific preparation using mock aptitude tests.

How many vacancies are there in RRB NTPC 2024?

RRB NTPC CEN 05/2024 has announced 11,558 vacancies across Graduate Level and Under Graduate Level posts. For comparison, the 2019 cycle had 35,208 vacancies. Competition is intense — lakhs of candidates are expected to appear.

Which is the best post in RRB NTPC?

Station Master and Commercial Apprentice are widely considered the best NTPC posts — both at Level 6 (Rs. 35,400 basic, Rs. 45,000–55,000 in-hand), both office-and-operations-based, and both have excellent promotion paths to Divisional Controller and Divisional Commercial Officer respectively. Goods Guard is also excellent due to Running Allowance boosting actual take-home significantly beyond the Level 5 basic pay.
