What is RRB ALP? Understanding the Role

RRB ALP stands for Railway Recruitment Board — Assistant Loco Pilot. It is a national-level recruitment exam conducted by the Railway Recruitment Board to hire candidates for the position of Assistant Loco Pilot in Indian Railways.

An Assistant Loco Pilot is essentially the co-pilot of a train. You work alongside a senior Loco Pilot, assist in driving and controlling the locomotive, monitor all onboard instruments, observe signals, and ensure that every journey is safe and on schedule. Over time, with experience and departmental exams, you become the Loco Pilot — the person actually driving the train.

Think of it this way: becoming an ALP is Step 1 in a career that can take you all the way to driving high-speed express trains and Vande Bharat Express locomotives.

Where Will You Be Posted?

Selected candidates are posted to one of the 21 railway zones across India, including:

  • Central, Western, Northern, Southern Railway
  • Eastern, South Eastern, North Eastern Railway
  • Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), Metro Railway Kolkata
  • And 13 other railway divisions spread across every state in India

Job Profile — What Does an ALP Actually Do?

Let us be honest about what this job involves, because it is very different from a typical desk job. As an ALP, you will be:

Your Daily Responsibilities

  • Sitting in the locomotive cabin and assisting the Loco Pilot in operating the train
  • Monitoring all onboard instruments, meters, and operational gauges continuously
  • Keeping a sharp eye on railway signals, track conditions, and level crossings
  • Inspecting the locomotive before every trip — checking brakes, fuel, oil, and equipment
  • Performing minor on-the-spot repairs and maintenance when needed
  • Maintaining accurate trip logs and operational records
  • Reporting any track defects, signal failures, or equipment anomalies immediately
  • Communicating with Guards, Station Masters, and Control Rooms during the journey

What Kind of Job Is This Really?

  • Field job — you will be in the locomotive, not sitting at a desk
  • Rotational shift duties — including nights, weekends, and public holidays
  • Running Allowance — you earn extra pay for every kilometer you operate the train (this is a unique perk only loco running staff get)
  • Railway colony accommodation available in most zones
  • Free railway travel passes for you and your family

The ALP role is demanding, safety-critical, and requires constant alertness. But for those who love trains and want a dynamic career, it is incredibly rewarding.

Eligibility Criteria — Who Can Apply?

Educational Qualification

This is where RRB ALP is different from most SSC exams. You need more than just a Class 10 pass. You must have a technical qualification as well:

  • Class 10 (Matriculation) from a recognised Board — AND —
  • ITI from NCVT/SCVT in a relevant trade (Electrician, Fitter, Mechanic, Wireman, Electronic Mechanic, etc.) — OR —
  • 3-year Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Automobile, IT, etc.) — OR —
  • Degree in Engineering (B.E. / B.Tech) in a relevant stream

The trade of your ITI or stream of your Diploma/Degree must match the trade specified for ALP in the official CEN 01/2026 notification. Always verify this before applying.

Age Limit

  • Minimum: 18 years
  • Maximum: 33 years (General category)
  • OBC (NCL): Up to 36 years (3 years relaxation)
  • SC / ST: Up to 38 years (5 years relaxation)
  • PwBD (General): Up to 43 years (10 years relaxation)
  • Ex-Servicemen: As per government norms

Medical Standards — Very Important!

RRB ALP follows the A-1 Medical Standard — the highest fitness category in Railways. This is because the role is safety-critical.

  • Vision: 6/6 (one eye) and 6/9 (other eye) without glasses — distant vision
  • No colour blindness — you must distinguish red, green, and yellow signals perfectly
  • No physical condition that could affect safe train operation
  • Medical exam is conducted by Railway Medical Officers after final selection

If you wear glasses or have colour blindness, you may be disqualified at the Medical stage even if you clear all written stages. Get your eyes tested early.

Application Fee

  • General / OBC / EWS candidates: Rs. 500 (Rs. 400 refunded after attending CBT 1)
  • SC / ST / Female / Transgender / Ex-Servicemen / Minorities / EBC: Rs. 250 (fully refunded after attending CBT 1)
  • Payment mode: Online only — Debit Card / Credit Card / Net Banking / UPI

Selection Process — All 5 Stages Explained

The RRB ALP 2026 selection process has 5 stages. You must clear all of them to get the final appointment:

  1. CBT 1 — First Stage Computer Based Test (Screening)
  2. CBT 2 — Second Stage Computer Based Test (Part A + Part B)
  3. CBAT — Computer Based Aptitude Test / Psycho Test
  4. Document Verification (DV)
  5. Medical Examination (ME)

Important: CBT 1 is only a screening test — its marks do NOT count in your final merit. Your ranking is decided by CBT 2 Part A (50%) + CBAT (50%).

The Revised Merit Formula for 2026

StageWeightageNature
CBT 10%Screening only — not counted
CBT 2 Part A50%Counted in final merit
CBT 2 Part B0%Qualifying only — 35% min.
CBAT (Aptitude Test)50%Counted in final merit

This is a major change from 2025 where CBT 2 had 70% weightage and CBAT had 30%. Now both are equal at 50% each. This means the Aptitude Test (CBAT) is just as important as your written exam. Do not neglect it.

Exam Pattern — Stage by Stage Breakdown

CBT 1 — Screening Test

CBT 1 is the first gate you need to cross. It is a 75-question, 75-mark exam to be completed in 60 minutes. It tests you at Class 10 level and is available in Hindi, English, and regional languages.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is RRB ALP a good career choice in 2026?

Absolutely. 11,127 vacancies, a starting in-hand salary of Rs 25,000–35,000, free railway travel passes, railway accommodation, and a clear promotion path to Loco Pilot and beyond — RRB ALP is one of the most complete government career packages available for technical candidates.

Can a Diploma holder apply for RRB ALP?

Yes. Candidates with a 3-year Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Automobile, Instrumentation, IT, or equivalent) are eligible to apply. Degree holders (B.E./B.Tech) are also eligible.

What is the difference between CBT 1 and CBT 2?

CBT 1 is a screening test — its marks do not count in your final merit. It only shortlists you for CBT 2. CBT 2 is the main merit-based exam and its Part A carries 50% weightage in your final rank. Always prepare CBT 2 more seriously than CBT 1.

What is CBAT and why does it matter so much in 2026?

CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test) is a psychological fitness test for ALP candidates. It tests memory, attention, depth perception, vigilance, and concentration. In 2026, RRB has increased its weightage from 30% to 50% — making it equally important as your written exam score. Many candidates who score high in CBT 2 lose their rank due to poor CBAT performance.

What happens during the training period?

Newly selected ALPs undergo approximately 151 days of induction and on-the-job training covering locomotive systems, safety procedures, and operational protocols. During this training period, a stipend equivalent to your basic pay (Rs. 19,900) is provided.
