The Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) is an important examination in India for students hoping to become engineers. After completing 12th grade, many students begin taking the JEE to gain acceptance into top engineering schools. The JEE examination is sub-divided into two parts: JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. JEE Mains is the initial stage and functions as the basic entry level JEE for students who have finished Class XII. Students can take the JEE Mains either once (Session 1) or twice (Session 2). If a student fails to obtain a sufficiently high score during the first attempt, the student can retake to improve upon their score. Students may register for JEE Advanced only after they have passed JEE Mains with a passing score and met or exceeded the JEE cutoff score. JEE Advanced contains questions that are more difficult than those on JEE Mains; therefore, a student requires a more comprehensive grasp of the subject material.
The dates each year for the JEE exam are fixed but may be subject to slight variations per the official announcement. JEE is typically conducted in two sessions — JEE-1 and JEE-2. This allows students to attempt JEE twice in the same academic year, and if they are unhappy with their performance from JEE-1, they have an opportunity to increase their JEE scores from JEE-2.

The syllabus for JEE is made up of 3 different subjects: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. These subjects will have been studied by students in a similar way in the 11th and 12th grades; therefore, students will already be familiar with most of these topics.

The syllabus for JEE Mains is similar to that of the JEE Advanced in many ways. The difference is that basic concepts are assessed by way of direct questions at the JEE Mains level; however, JEE Advanced tests the students’ ability to apply and understand concepts using their previous knowledge. There is a significant difference in the level of difficulty of questions found in the JEE Advanced exam compared to JEE Mains.
The JEE exam follows an outlined pattern so students can anticipate what to expect on test day. The JEE consists of three subjects divided equally: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

The JEE Advanced has a more difficult pattern than the JEE Mains. Because JEE Advanced can include single correct, multiple correct, and NV questions, the scoring uses varying methods. JEE Advanced is considerably more challenging than the JEE Mains and requires students to show greater depth of understanding.

JEE will set the Cut Off Score for the Mains and Advanced exams. The Cut Off Score is defined as the lowest number of points required to qualify for the JEE examination.

The JEE Cut Off (Mains and Advanced) will change from year to year based on several factors such as the difficulty of the exam, the number of students who take the exam, and how many seats are available in IITs. If the exam is easy, the cutoff will generally go up; if hard, the cutoff generally goes down. Because of this, students should always aim for a mark that is above the expected JEE cut off mark in order to ensure their own success.
The JEE ranking system helps identify students and give them admission into various Engineering Colleges like IITs, NITs, and IIITs. Your JEE Rank is primarily based on the marks you receive and your Percentile compared to other students that took the exam. For JEE Mains, your rank will be based on percentile scores. For JEE Advanced, rank is directly correlated to marks received.

Your JEE Rank is important for getting into IIT because most of the top IITs and popular fields (like Computer Science) require extremely high ranks. Lower-ranking students can potentially get into IIT; however, they may not be able to get into the field or branch they want. Therefore, students always try to score higher to ensure a higher rank.
